Parents Have School Choice Option for all Okaloosa Schools
Okaloosa County School District’s plan for Controlled School Choice Open Enrollment is to continue a system for parents’ preferential school choice through a waiver application process. The district’s ongoing “Controlled Open Enrollment Plan” provides for zoning waivers as an avenue for parents to request the relocation of their child to a school of their choice.

If your student would like to attend Niceville High School, a zoning waiver form should be completed and returned to NHS at your earliest convenience.  If you have a student currently attending NHS on a zoning waiver, it is important to remember that a new waiver must be submitted yearly if you wish your child to remain at NHS.

    NHS Students Invited to
National Science Conference in Washington, D. C.

NHS Students Invited to National Science Conference in Washington, DC
    L-R:  Justin Anderson, sophomore; T. J. Brown, junior;
    and Victoria Marks, sophomore.

The Niceville High School Gifted Program has again been fortunate to have received a high honor from a major international science organization.  The Census of Marine Life, through the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, has asked three students, T. J. Brown, Justin Anderson and Victoria Marks, to be their guests at the 11th National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment sponsored by the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) which will be held from 19-21 January 2011, in Washington, D.C.  This invitation comes as a result of the extensive work that has been accomplished by the NHS Gifted Program’s NaGISA (Natural Geography In-Shore Area) team in doing biodiversity studies along the Northwest Florida coast and its program extension efforts around the world.  Thus far, Niceville High School NaGISA students have helped establish new collection sites in Tanzania and Egypt, helped establish a NaGISA High School Initiative program in Crete, and this July will be traveling to Turkey to establish a new collection site and High School Initiative program on the Black Sea.

In addition to the international aspects of the NaGISA project, students have been able to conduct extensive biodiversity data collection and analysis operations on beach areas in Destin.  This data is particularly important since it provides a baseline for the condition of our local area prior to the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill and will continue to monitor conditions for the foreseeable future.  This information will be critical for not only assessing any damage that might be caused by the oil spill, but also to track other changes that could be occurring in the local near shore environment.  In view of the potential damage that the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill may have on our local environment, the Niceville High School NaGISA project will shortly be making an application to seek a grant from the $500 million BP Gulf Coast Research Initiative to help expand their research on our section of the Gulf of Mexico.

This selection for participation in the NCSE Conference in Washington, D.C. is not the first honor bestowed on the program.  In July 2004, the program was selected by the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund for its initial Collaborative School Science Network fully funded exchange program with a Japanese high school.  In October 2006, they were invited to attend and present at the 1st NaGISA World Conference in Kobe, Japan.  This trip was made possible due to the generosity of many community members and a former Niceville High School alumnus, Mr. Larry Kline.

In 2009 and 2010, the program received grants from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the National Defense Industry Association.  Also, in April 2010, the Niceville High School NaGISA project was selected for the Sea World Environmental Excellence Award.  Finally, in October 2010, two students and one faculty member were selected to attend the final report conference for the Census of Marine Life in London, England.  There were 400 participants out of the 2700 scientists from 80 countries involved in the project allowed to attend.  The Niceville High School participants were the only high school people invited to attend this highly prestigious event.  Rick Hernandez sponsors the NaGISA program.

Rebekah Pruett and Nathan Ritterband Nominated for Chelco Program
Rebekah Pruett and Nate Ritterband, both juniors at Niceville High School, have been nominated to enter Chelco's Youth Tour Program. Chelco sponsors the annual contest for high school juniors that allows deserving students to compete for an all expense paid, week-long trip to Washington, D.C. The program is designed for young people to increase their understanding of rural electric cooperatives, become familiar with the historical and political environment of the nation's capital, visit elected officials and meet students from all over the country. CHELCO is a member-owned electric cooperative that serves the energy needs of approximately 45,000 homes and businesses in Okaloosa and Walton counties. Rebekah and Nate are both Advanced Studies students and will be attending the area Chelco conference in Tallahassee this spring.

Official AICE certificates from the University of Cambridge have arrived for those students who earned passing scores on the May/June 2010 examinations.  You will be receiving your official University of Cambridge International Examinations General Certificate of Education and your Statement of Results.  Please read carefully the information on the front and back of both documents.  (Some of you may have already received your Statement of Results.)
Students may receive their certificate in one of three ways:

    1. Students currently enrolled at NHS will receive their certificates at school.
    2. Certificates for students who graduated will be given to siblings enrolled at NHS if applicable.
    3. Students who have graduated and have no siblings at NHS must email the coordinator, Donnie Pridgen, at pridgend@mail.okaloosa.k12.fl.us and request the certificate be mailed or arrange to pick it up.  When requesting it be mailed, include a current name and address.

The General Certificate of Education with the silver CIE logo on the bottom right should be used as your official transcript and presented to your college or university for possible credits.  You must ask that a copy be made as Cambridge will not reissue the certificate.  It is important that you keep your certificate at all times as Niceville High School does not retain a copy of the Cambridge International Certificate or the Statement of Results.  The Statement of Results is issued by CIE as a preliminary record of results.
As a reminder, Section 1007.27(2), Florida Statutes, require that all public colleges and universities grant credit for passing scores received through AP and AICE examinations.

    College Board Designates 168 NHS

    Students as AP Scholars

AP Scholars List     |      AP Scholars with Honors     |      AP Scholar with Distinction

One hundred and sixty-eight students at Niceville High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program exams.  NHS students took AP Exams in May 2010 after completing challenging college-level courses. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the student’s performance on AP exams.

Seven students from NHS qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.  These students are Heather Caulkins, Washington University, St. Louis; Chase Cloutier, St. Franciscan University, Steubenville, Ohio;  Jacob A. Davis, University of Central Florida; Kathryn Dawson, University of Florida; Logan McDonald, Florida Gulf Coast University; Amelia Shermer, University of Central Florida; and Mark Stiles, North Georgia State University.

Fifty-one students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

Thirty-two students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

Eighty-five students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams, with grades of 3 or higher.

NHS offers 23 AP courses. In May 2010, 696 students took 1,288 exams.  Most of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement, or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams. More than 1,400 institutions award a full year’s credit (sophomore standing) to students presenting a sufficient number of qualifying grades.

William Kortbein has received the Award for Excellence in Writing given by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) in recognition of excellence in writing by high school juniors.  Kortbein is one of only 543 students in the nation selected for the award, as well as the only student from Okaloosa County.  This outstanding senior has demonstrated not only superior ability but also notable versatility in writing.  William was nominated by his junior English teacher, Ms. Patricia Mixon.  The NCTE also commended the English Department at NHS for their part in producing outstanding writers.  The Achievement Awards in Writing program was established in 1957 to encourage high students in their writing and to recognize publicly some of the best student writers in the nation.

Newsweek Ranks NHS as One of America’s Best High Schools

Newsweek recently listed Niceville High School at number 131 in the ranking of America’s Best High Schools.  Each year, Newsweek picks the best high schools in the country based on how hard school staffs work to challenge students with advanced-placement college-level courses and tests. Just over 1.600 schools made the list, including NHS.

“I am very proud of them,” said Okaloosa Superintendent Alexis Tibbetts. “I know they work very hard. We are making big inroads in closing the gap and getting even more kids in those programs.”

Only the top 6 percent of all public high schools in the country made the list.  Jay Mathews,  a Newsweek contributing editor and Washington Post columnist, ranks schools based on the prevalence of college preparatory courses — Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Cambridge AICE.

“In this particular study, it is saying that we have opened up access; that more courses at higher levels are being offered,” said Niceville High School Principal Linda Smith. “And more students are taking advantage of the higher-level courses.”
In May 2010, NHS gave 1287 AP exams to 695 students.  The pass rate (a score of 3 or higher) was 65%, up 5% from 2009.

Complying with Florida's Class Size Amendment:
    Information for Students and Parents

Niceville High School will comply with Florida's class size amendment which requires that there be no more than 25 students in designated core courses at the high school level. A preliminary check will be done on September 10 in order to determine whether or not NHS is in compliance. A school can be out of compliance by having just one student too many in any of the designated core courses.

In our requirement to meet the mandate of Florida's constitution, please be aware that changes to student schedules and the closing of certain classes is occurring and that your student may be affected. Every effort is being made to ensure that schedule changes or course closures are handled with the least amount of disruption to the student as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

"Back to School Night" will be held on Tuesday, August 3 at NHS from 6-7 PM. Upon entering the school, students will find signs in the hallways of the main entrances listing the assigned homerooms. Students should go to their SOAR homeroom first to meet their homeroom teacher and get a copy of their schedule. During this time, parents and students may walk freely through their schedules and meet each teacher. Lockers will also be available for purchase in the Attendance Office during the evening. Once students receive their schedule, only students who have a period missing in their schedule will be able to stop by Guidance during the visitation as time will not permit other scheduling issues. Our visitation will conclude at 7 PM. We look forward to seeing you soon!
