Back to School Night
"Back to School Night" will be held on Tuesday, August 3 at NHS from 6-7 PM. Upon entering the school, students will find signs in the hallways of the main entrances listing the assigned homerooms. Students should go to their SOAR homeroom first to meet their homeroom teacher and get a copy of their schedule. During this time, parents and students may walk freely through their schedules and meet each teacher. Lockers will also be available for purchase in the Attendance Office during the evening. Once students receive their schedule, only students who have a period missing in their schedule will be able to stop by Guidance during the visitation as time will not permit other scheduling issues. Our visitation will conclude at 7 PM. We look forward to seeing you soon!

NHS Students Soar on 2010 FCAT
Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) results released on June 29 by the Florida Department of Education show that Niceville High School students outperformed students from the five other traditional high schools in Okaloosa County. NHS students showed improvement in reading, math and science from 2009. The FCAT scores show that the percentage of NHS students scoring at Level 3 and above in reading, math, writing and science is higher than the five other traditional high schools in Okaloosa County and higher than the average scores for the State of Florida. read more
Report Cards
Report cards will be available for pick up in the NHS main office beginning Wednesday, June 23. Any student who participated in FCAT testing in March of this school year, however, will have their report card mailed home with the FCAT scores once they are received, so it is not required that report cards be picked up from NHS on June 23 if the mail option is more convenient for those who participated in FCAT. At this time, we are awaiting further information from the Florida Department of Education regarding the expected date that schools will receive their FCAT scores.

Parents Have School Choice Option for all Okaloosa Schools
Okaloosa County School District’s plan for Controlled School Choice Open Enrollment is to continue a system for parents’ preferential school choice through a waiver application process. The district’s ongoing “Controlled Open Enrollment Plan” provides for zoning waivers as an avenue for parents to request the relocation of their child to a school of their choice.
If your student would like to attend Niceville High School, a zoning waiver form should be completed and returned to NHS at your earliest convenience. If you have a student currently attending NHS on a zoning waiver, it is important to remember that a new waiver must be submitted yearly if you wish your child to remain at NHS.

Devon Caulkins and Meredith Roberts Nominated for Chelco Program
Devon Caulkins and Meredith Roberts, both juniors at Niceville High School, have been nominated to enter Chelco’s Youth Tour Program. Devon is a member of the Eagle Pride Marching and Concert bands. Meredith is a member of the Women’s Select Chorus. Chelco sponsors the annual contest for high school juniors that allows deserving students to compete for an all expense paid, week-long trip to Washington, D.C. Electric cooperatives all over the country hold this contest that was inspired by Lyndon Johnson in 1957 when he was a senator. That year, electric cooperatives in Texas began sending groups of young people to Washington to work during the summer in Senator Johnson’s office and learn more about their government. The program is designed for young people to increase their understanding of rural electric cooperatives, become familiar with the historical and political environment of the nation’s capital, visit elected officials and meet students from all over the country. CHELCO is a member-owned electric cooperative that serves the energy needs of approximately 45,000 homes and businesses in Okaloosa and Walton counties. Devon and Meredith are both Advanced Studies students and will be attending the area Chelco conference in Tallahassee this spring.

Niceville High School is extending special congratulations to Meagan Balding and Mark Barrett who were recently named “School Winners” for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. To be eligible for this award, students must exhibit excellence in academics, athletics, and community/school leadership.

NaGISA Hold Drawing for Urban Meyer Football and Fishing Trip
Since October 2003, Niceville High School has been involved in a partnership with Kyoto University of Japan in conducting ground breaking environmental research along the beaches of the Gulf Coast. Sponsored by Kyoto University’s Seto Marine Biological Research Laboratory, NaGISA (Natural Geography of In-Shore Areas) is a fifty-year biodiversity study that takes place along the shoreline and various depths up to 20 meters. The study involves collecting specimens and cataloging them in a global database. Once the project is completed, scientists will be able to access the database to determine whether any patterns due to weather or climate change emerge. One of the most significant aspects of this project is the partnership between high schools and one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Another unique aspect is that high school students are conducting graduate level research in a high school setting.
The NaGISA team is holding two drawings: one for a five-person deep sea fishing trip valued at $2500 provided by Signature Shares, and the other is for an autographed football signed by Coach Urban Myer, head coach of the University of Florida Gators. The winner of the fishing trip will be announced at the senior night baseball game in the spring. The winner and four other fishermen will experience a day of offshore fishing in style with Capt. Matt in search of blue marlin, mahi, tuna and wahoo aboard a 2008 32’ Regulator sport fisherman. This is not a charter boat, but a specially outfitted vessel built for Signature Shares Yacht Share Company. A video of your trip will be provided. The winner of the Urban Meyer football will be announced at Niceville’s first playoff football game. The football is a NCAA regulation ball with a Gator motif and Coach Meyer’s signature.
Tickets for both drawings can be purchased at Niceville High School during home football games, room 303 at NHS or from any NaGISA student. Proceeds will help with funding NaGISA’s research trip to Egypt. The price for tickets is as follows:
1 ticket for $3
2 tickets for $5
4 tickets for $10
9 tickets for $20

College Board designates 155 NHS Students as AP Scholars
One hundred and fifty-five students at Niceville High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program exams. NHS students took AP Exams in May 2009 after completing challenging college-level courses. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the student’s performance on AP exams.
Six students from NHS qualified for the prestigious National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. These students are Heather Caulkins, NHS senior; Kyle Fontaine, Florida Institute of Technology; Brian Kane, Air Force Academy; William Karcher, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Gregory A. Mitchell, Georgia Tech; and C. Jared Schwantz, Vanderbilt.
“Students and teachers at NHS never cease to amaze me. They continue to strive for excellence right down to the final days of the school year leading up to the AP exams. The increasing numbers of students participating in AP courses certainly shows our students’ level of commitment toward their education and their desire to attend college,” said Christy McInnis, assistant principal for Curriculum and Instruction at NHS.
Forty-five students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
Thirty students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
Eighty students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams, with grades of 3 or higher.
NHS offers 27 AP courses. In May 2009, 711 students took 1,385 exams. Most of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement, or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams. More than 1,400 institutions award a full year’s credit (sophomore standing) to students presenting a sufficient number of qualifying grades.

NHS Grad Volunteering in Africa with the Peace Corps
Most seventh-graders don't dream about joining the Peace Corps or living in Africa, but Niceville High School Class of 2004 graduate and University of Florida graduate student Jessica "Jesi" Griffin wasn't your typical seventh-grader.
After Griffin graduates this month with a master's degree in social studies education, she will spend the next 27 months volunteering in Malawi with the Peace Corps. Griffin has wanted to join the international volunteer organization since she read an article about it in middle school.
"I've always been drawn to Africa through my love of history," Griffin said.
Griffin visited Africa for the first time last summer after receiving a bachelor's degree in history from UF. She volunteered in South Africa working with children. When Griffin returned to UF for graduate school, she already knew she wanted to return to Africa with the Peace Corps.
The application process took nearly a year. "The long application process is a test of patience and your desire to do this," said Amy Panikowski, Peace Corps recruiter at UF.
UF is the No. 1 producer of Peace Corps volunteers in the Southeast and ranks No. 15 nationally based on the number of overseas volunteers.
"We're increasingly seeing more applicants," Panikowski said. "We have kids at UF that are more globally minded."
Griffin will leave for Malawi in September and spend the first three months living with a host family while she trains to become a teacher development facilitator. She will educate teachers on proper teaching methods, conduct workshops and work on community development.
"It's about making a change," Griffin said. "Peace Corps is 100 percent about the work, not the money."
While overseas, Peace Corps volunteers are provided with an allowance to pay for living expenses and may defer student loans. Upon returning, volunteers receive about $6,000 to aid them in their transition back to their pre-Peace Corps lives.
While Griffin isn't scared about being away from home for the next 27 months, she will miss her Phi Mu sorority sisters and their support. As a Phi Mu member, Griffin was involved with socials, philanthropies and Dance Marathon. She also was a member of Signing Gators, a sign language club, and Eta Sigma Phi, a classical studies fraternity.
Griffin said she also will miss simple pleasures such as being able to pick up the phone and call family or friends.
"I'll have e-mail and Facebook, but it will still be hard," she said.
Griffin plans to travel when her time is up with the Peace Corps, but for now she is focused on getting ready to move to Malawi and make a difference.
"What they've done is really immeasurable," she said. "It's amazing to see what actual skill sets and help—not money—can do."
